Design Department at IITH Innovation Day 2023

Entering its crystal year IITH hosted a first-of-its-kind “Innovation Day”, dedicated to collaboration between startups, Industry, Academia, and Tech-transfer-Ready Innovations on 7th January 2023. As part of this Day the Department of Design presented its healthcare innovations, Vāyu and Cāṟu developed by Shovan Kanti Kar and V Vishnu Srinivasa Prasad respectively (MDes 2021-23) under the guidance of Prof Srikar AVR.

Vāyu – Your home is your safe haven. So, the air you breathe should be pure. But, do you know the air in your home can be more polluted than the outdoors, even when your home seems pristine? ‘Vāyu’ makes sure that you breathe in clean air without worrying about air pollutants. The system of Vāyu air purifier captures and disinfects all the pathogens with a UVC lamp and HEPA filter technology to remove 99.97% airborne particles. Welcome your new home companion and take a breath in peace with Vāyu!

Cāṟu – In recent times, especially with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising health concerns, people are turning to natural forms of medicine for the holistic improvement of their health and the health of loved ones. Ayurveda is one such means, as it has been followed and practiced for generations in the Indian subcontinent. And even among Ayurvedic medications, kashaya appears to be the most commonly used type of Ayurvedic herbal medicine in households. It is a simple yet effective solution to treat illnesses such as sore throat, cold, fever, indigestion, cough, etc. The process is still done by hand – from roasting the ingredients to grinding, boiling, and serving. It is limited to the kitchen due to several constraints/ obstructions. This project intends to design and develop a Kashaya-making machine that would benefit the user significantly. The design is suitable for one serving, where the user can do the roasting, grinding, boiling, filtering, and cooling in one single product without the hassle of using several tools for the same preparation process. It would eliminate the constant supervision required in the traditional process. It has been designed with portability in mind so that it is easy to carry to workplaces or even be used at home.
