Eligibility criteria
The candidates should have a minimum of First Class (60% marks or 6 CGPA) or equivalent grades in the qualifying examination (relaxation is provided on CGPA/marks for SC/ST/OBC candidates, 10% for OBC candidates and 15% for SC/ST candidates). The following are considered,
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Architecture / Design / Interior Design or equivalent (4 year program after 10+2)
- Professional Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent of a 4-year program after 10+2)
- BFA (4-year professional program after 10+2)
- Master’s degree in Arts / Science / Computer Applications (2-year program after 10+2+3)
Application process
- Application to the programme will be online through the IITH portal.
- M Des Program offers 4 specialisations – Visual Design, Interaction Design, Product Design and Photography, Film & Animation. A candidate can apply for a maximum of two specialisations in a program year. Separate applications need to be submitted for applying to different specializations.
- Only shortlisted candidates invited for in-person interview/test will be communicated through email. Website will also be displaying the shortlist.
- Personal interview will be conducted in-person at IITH campus.
- Final selection is subject to number of seats approved by the institute.
Selection process: MoE seats and Self-sponsored seats
The qualifying exam is the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED). CEED score of the past one year will be considered valid.
- Step -1: Submission of Application through IITH website (Call opens Feb/ Mar 2027)
- Step -2: Shortlist for interview based on CEED score
- Step -3: In-person studio test and/or interview and portfolio evaluation on campus
- Step -4: Final results

What is a self-financed seat?
Self Sponsored M Des is part of the regular M Des program. Students will pay a tuition fee of Rs. 20,000 per credit for 48 credits in 24 months. They will not receive any scholarships. Recent updates on fee structure can be found here.
Is CEED mandatory for MOE and SS?
Yes. CEED score of the past one year will be considered valid.
Do I need to submit separate forms for each specialization and program?
Yes, you may submit a maximum of 2 forms for two separate specializations.
Whether the self-sponsored students are allowed to sit for institute placements?
Yes, students have all the usual benefits of IIT students.
When can I apply for the self-financed category? When does the portal open?
Admission is usually announced around mid-March.
How many M Des specialisations can one apply at a time?
M Des Program offers three specialisations – 1. Visual Design 2. Interaction Design, 3.Product Design 4. Photography, Film & Animation Candidates can give their preferences (first and second) at the time of application. A Candidate can apply for a maximum of two specialisations in a program year, through separate form submission.
