Industry Lecture Series 2022

Title: Humans, Immersion, and Experiences
A session curated for Design school students as an introduction to Immersive Design. In the session we will explore:

  • The caveats of working with Extended Reality (XR)
  • Human centric approach to XR
  • Designing for immersive experiences

Title: The Biennale Model
Bose Krishnamachari on the confluence of art, architecture and culture in his talk on “The Biennale Model” in the backdrop of Kochi – Muziris Biennale 2022, which in recent years has rose to one of the largest art exhibitions in the country and the biggest contemporary art festivals in Asia.

Bose is the founder member and President of Kochi Biennale Foundation and Biennale Director of international exhibition of contemporary art, Kochi-Muziris Biennale. He took his BFA from Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai in, and then completed his MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in. He was a recipient of the award of the Kerala Lalita Kala Akademi, British Council travel award, Mid America Arts Alliance Award, Charles Wallace India Trust Award, LifeTime Fellowship Award- Kerala Lalita Kala Academy and was first runner up for the Bose Pacia Prize for Modern Art, New York, 2001. His work comprises vivid abstract paintings, figurative drawings, sculpture, photography, multimedia installations and architecture. In 2010, the Kerala State Government invited him to start India’s first international biennale of contemporary art. He is the Artistic Director and Co-Curator of India’s first Biennale – The Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2012, Director of Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2014 and President of the Kochi Biennale Foundation. He has been devoting most of his time in making Kochi-Muziris Biennale the cynosure of the art.


Title: Animation production

Rajesh Thakare and Troy Vasanth are internationally acclaimed filmmakers and designers. They are founders of Blackbird Design Studio. Their journey in design has begun after completing their masters from the National Institute of Design (NID). Their student film, ‘Good Morning Mumbai’ has received numerous awards and recognition. It has pushed the boundaries for student projects and has been an inspiration for Indian animation ever since its release. Their work in Blackbird Design Studio has several projects in animation, mural art, installation, film, sound and more. Their recent identity video, ‘BirdBox’ is a stop motion film utilizing recycled carton boxes. This work has been screened at Annecy, 2022, one of the most prestigious animation film festivals in the world. In this session, they will discuss the creative process of ‘Good Morning Mumbai’, ‘BirdBox’ and a few selected projects. Their work truly pushes the boundaries of Indian animation and design.


Title: Earthen Tunes: A Design thinking based approach to entrepreneurship

About the Founders:
Santosh kocherlakota is one of the co-founders of Earthen Tunes. He has completed his masters in design from National institute of design Ahmedabad and his engineering in electronics and Instrumentation from BITS-pilani. Prior to starting Earthen Tunes ,he has worked as assistant manager in Bharat petroleum and has later worked on multiple social innovation projects such as electric wheelchair for India which has also been supported by IIT Bombay and is patented (WO 2019/030778 A1).

Nakul Lathkar has completed his masters from National Institute of Design Ahmedabad and his engineering from Mumbai. Nakul Lathkar is an expert visualizer and designer and prior to Co founding Earthen Tunes has worked on multiple automotive/Transportation Design Projects in both Europe(CEIIA) and India(Railway Design Centre). Nakul Lathkar is also presently consulting for OLA Mobility and is helping them design their upcoming electric car.

Vidyadhar Bhandare
has also completed his masters from National Institute of design Ahmedabad and his engineering in automobile design from RMIT-Satara. He posses expert knowledge in fabrication and quality control and helped multiple automobile startups in design and manufacturing prior to cofounding Earthen Tunes. He has also helped design modern seating for Indian Railways via the Railway Design Centre-Ahmedabad and has also won multiple awards such as the Nissan mobility award for his work in sustainable mobility. He is presently spearheading the sustainable Packaging division at Earthen Tunes. Apart from being an Entrepreneur, Vidyadhar is also an expert Barista and state level Swimming champion.

Better India


Title: Cinematic VR

The presentation will explore imaginative storytelling practices and processes for Cinematic Virtual Reality and 360° video production. Max Schleser will present two Creative Arts research projects A New Dawn (Schleser 2021, 26min) and Steel City (Schleser 2021, 19min).

A New Dawn is a memory-scape. The affordances and aesthetic of experimental Cinematic VR experience are explored through the viewer’s presence in a hybrid space; partly ‘Dream of a Natural Language’ and ‘Simulation as Narrative’.

Steel City demonstrates the potential and prospects of accessible omnidirectional video cameras. Steel City translated mobile media art aesthetics into the domain of Mobile Cinematic VR (MCVR). The research aim was to explore the mobile specific characteristics of presence, intimacy and imaginative encounters in MCVR. The MCVR experience, as much as the public artworks, display the dialectic of change and stagnation.

Max Schleser (BA Hons, MA Art and Media Practice with Distinction, PhD Westminster) is a Professor in Film and Television and Researcher in the Centre for Transformative Media Technologies (CTMT) at Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia), Adobe Education Leader, Founder of the Mobile Innovation Network & Association (www.mina.pro) and Screening Director of the International Mobile Innovation Screening & Festival.


Title: Storytelling and Reputation
Can storytelling build and maintain reputations? If so, what kind of stories? Is there a genre that for reputation building? Does visual stories work better?” Let’s find out and analyse some case studies.

Title: A designer’s entrepreneurship journey
Kanaka’s experience of founding and Indian theme based development and marketing of toys based in Coimbatore.

Kanaka Ananth is Director of Studio Maniams, a design studio for design, development and marketing of indigenous toys based in Coimbatore. She is an architect and an industrial designer/ toy designer from the first batch of Toy Design, National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Kanaka launched her own brand of Toys, Maniams Toys inspired from elements of Indian culture. Maniams Toys was one of the winners of Toycathon 2021, a pan India competition initiated by the Ministry of Education and was also selected to be a part of the Amazon Launchpad for its uniqueness. Some of her other games include Fast Track, Amazing me etc. Prior to setting up her studio, Kanaka had worked with Creative Educational Aids Pvt Ltd, Delhi, Funskool India Ltd, Chennai etc. She has been on the advisory board of the CHILD magazine which is part of the Media Transasia group. As a design educator with 15 + years of work experience, Kanaka has mentored more than 500+ design students and conducted a large number of corporate training programmes for entrepreneurs, schools, colleges & industries in India. Kanaka made it to the shortlist of 40 women for the Digipivot 2021, a digital marketing training initiative launched by Google with ISB.



As a passionate Service Designer, Susmita Chakrabarty is always focused on the simple design solution for any critical problem. She is always ready to empathize with customer needs along with business to create a smooth road map. Her journey from envisioning design problems to implementing satisfactory experiences for end-users is always a proven delight.


Dr. Vidya Priya Rao is the Founder of Innovatus Marketers Touchpoint, a strategy, design and innovation consultancy based in Mumbai, India. She helps companies harness their power of innovation by breaking out of their comfort zones and embracing the “what ifs”. Her challenge to start-ups, small and large organisations are to evaluate deeply their commitment to the consumer, to excel at digital today and thrive as digital tomorrow. She has had the pleasure to work with a broad range of clients including Baystree, Blupay, fonePaisa, Jascap, Knight & Frank, Nestle, Tata Power SED, Tarnea and VuClip.



Simpliforge Creations is an additive manufacturing (AM) solutions company imparting holistic AM technology adoption. Having Mr. Harish Rao, Finance minister of Telangana for inauguration of India’s first and South Asia’s largest Robotic Construction 3D Printer capable of full-scale construction, Simpliforge is building some of world’s first structures pushing the envelope of construction, architecture, design and computation.
