Department of Design, IIT Hyderabad

Within the dynamic ecosystem of IIT Hyderabad, the Department of Design (DoD) is a catalyst for groundbreaking solutions, where cutting-edge technology seamlessly integrates with impactful human experiences. IIT Hyderabad, is a top institution in Innovation and Engineering, and DoD leads the face of Design.

The Department of Design offers a vibrant environment for learning, practicing, research, and exploring several facets of design. The department envisions to creatively engage in the space between technologies and people. This involves facilitating innovation in the key emergent areas such as Participatory & Collaborative Design, Communication & Interaction Design, Professional Ethics & Sustainability, Product Systems & Services, Design & Education, Wellness, Crowd-Sourced Design, etc. “Design” calls for thinking “from-the-scratch,” thinking “Out-of-the-box” and thinking in line with the needs of contemporary society and devising creative solutions. “Design” is essentially aimed at enhancing the user experience. Improvement of any process/ service/ equipment by incorporation of ingenious means is what defines “Good Design.”

The Department of Design is committed to the growth of design education. To fulfill this vision, a joint Ph.D. Program with Swinburne University, Australia, and a Design Minor program has been initiated.

The vision of the Design Department at IITH is to be recognized for its leadership in the discipline and the profession by advancing design excellence in evolving themes of design that positively impact daily lives and inherits cultural values. Through its interdisciplinary faculty strength, the department is keen to tackle social & global challenges, towards a more sustainable future, developing entrepreneurial mindsets, and aims towards academic and research excellence.

To prepare the new generation of designers to shape the quality of human experience in products, communications and system integrated solutions through design excellence. The Department of Design at IITH provides an inspiring, creative, collaborative, excellent research environment and student-centered learning environment while preparing a responsible and thriving new generation of designers who apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities to enrich the profession, the society, and the global community with socially relevant design solutions keeping future perspective and sustainability in mind.

IIT Hyderabad is one among the 2nd generation of IITs started by the Govt. of India. Today IITH offers 11 B.Tech programs, 1 B.Des Program, 3 M.Sc programs, 18 M.Tech programs, 1 M.Des program, 1 MA Program, and 15 Ph.D. programs in all branches of engineering, science, liberal arts, and design. The very foundation of IIT Hyderabad is based on research and innovation. The vibrant research culture is evident from the number of patents and publications that IITH has. Based on unique fractal academics, the course curriculum is carefully designed to keep the enthusiasm of the students and to keep them in pace with the state of the art from the 1st semester till the 8th semester. IITH enjoys a very special relationship with Japanese Universities and Industries that goes beyond academics and research collaborations. In fact, some of the iconic buildings in the IITH campus carry the signature of Japanese architecture. IITH is creating a unique holistic educational ecosystem that offers interactive learning, a highly flexible academic structure, cutting-edge research, strong industry collaboration, and entrepreneurship. It is providing an environment wherein students and faculty are not afraid to translate their dreams into realities.

Department of Design and Manufacturing, IISc, Bengaluru

Amongst the most research and technology-intensive design and manufacturing schools in India, steeped in the ambience of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. IISc is one of the top institutions in the world, and Department of Design and Manufacturing (DM) is its design and manufacturing face.

Department of Design and Manufacturing (DM) (erstwhile Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM)), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru is among very few schools in India that train students in developing and making systemically-complex, technologically-intensive, and socially-impactful solutions that are functional, aesthetic, usable and sustainable. It is among the top design schools in the world that specialise in training development of hardware products and manufacturing systems, and has been among the best in research into design, ranking alongside design schools and research centres in Stanford, Delft, Cambridge and CMU.

Department of Design and Manufacturing (DM) (erstwhile Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM)), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru pursues excellence in teaching, research and industry interaction in the areas of design and manufacturing. The two-year professional Masters MDes programme (in Product Design and Engineering) has been the flagship programme of the Centre for over twenty-five years. From August 2019, Department of Design and Manufacturing (DM) (erstwhile Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM)), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru initiated, along with over twelve partnering departments at IISc, a brand new MTech in Smart Manufacturing, and a research programme (MTech by Research and PhD) in advanced manufacturing.

The Centre has two active research programmes. One is in advanced design and engineering, spanning the areas of Design Theory and Methodology, PLM, Human Factors in Design, User Interface Design, Vehicle Design, Technology Integration, Sustainability etc., with major applications in Automotive, Aerospace and Biomedical sectors. The other is an interdisciplinary programme in advanced manufacturing, with the following as research areas such as new materials and processes, digital manufacturing, manufacturing supply chains, sustainable manufacturing, Industry 4.0, controls, autonomous systems and robotics, and policy and entrepreneurship in manufacturing.

The core competence of Department of Design and Manufacturing (DM) (erstwhile Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM)), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru lies in the successful amalgamation of research into design and manufacturing (MTech by Research and PhD) and training for design and manufacturing in practice (through its MDes and MTech programmes). Department of Design and Manufacturing (DM) (erstwhile Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing (CPDM)), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru firmly believes that practitioners and researchers are complementary to one another. While practitioners create products and manufacturing systems to improve the society, researchers develop effective methods and tools for supporting practice and education for improved design and manufacturing.
